San Diego USATF
MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
2820 Camino del Rio South 130
August 20, 2003
- President Ken Bernard called the meeting to order at 7:16 p.m. In addition to the President and Secretary, the attendees were Lolitia Bache, Al Dandridge, Paul Greer, Lillian Mahoney, George Mathews, Tom Meyer, Joni Shirley, Jim Skelly, Tracy Sundlun, and Elizabeth Tate.
- The Board approved the minutes of the meeting of June 25.
- The President gave the Treasurer's report. The checking account balance was $10,050 while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000.
- The Board discussed setting the competition calendar for 2004 earlier than previous years, and unanimously approved Tate's motion for a meeting of the appropriate committee chairmen on September 9 at 7:00 p.m. at a location to be determined (possibly City Heights branch library). Tate will chair the meeting.
- Greer distributed the schedule and rules for the Dirt Dog Cross Country Series. Changes to previous years include team scoring and a cash award to the winning teams, and scoring the 50 and up masters divisions in the same manner as the other divisions. The series begins with the Balboa 4-Mile August 30 and culminates with the Championship November 15. Greer has invited runners from the Pacific and Southern California Associations to participate in the Championships.
- Mathews reported on the West Regional Masters Track & Field Championships. In spite of having the meet awarded very late, it drew over 200 athletes. He gave credit to the Senior Olympics office for their help with the meet. Efforts will be made to get the 2004 West Regionals in San Diego again, but publicized much earlier in order to get a higher turnout. The Association had an impressive showing at the USA Masters Track & Field Championships in Eugene. At least 29 athletes competed, with nine winning gold medals.
- At the National Masters Championships, Mathews investigated Dartfish's DartTrainer, and recommended the Association purchase the DartTrainer Basic, which has a USATF discount, for use in clinics as a membership benefit. The Board unanimously approved the purchase.
- Mathews noted that the Senior Olympics would be September 20 and encouraged participation or volunteering. He will also be starting up his winter throws meets in December. An idea which is in very early stages of consideration is a National Masters Winter Outdoors Track & Field Championship, to alternate between Florida and Southern California. The Board unanimously approved supporting the concept in discussions at the National Convention.
- Tate reported that Tyson Gray of Team Edge won the USA Junior Olympics championship in the Young Men's javelin.
- Skelly announced that the Association Officials had passed the 100 mark, which entitles the Association to an additional seat in the Officials Committee at the National Convention. He is naming Lillian Mahoney to that position. Skelly also noted the passing of Harry Hawke, a long-time official and champion competitor in the throws. G. Shirley requested information to post an obituary on the website.
- Sundlun briefly discussed the 2004 50K U.S. Olympic Race Walk Team Trials, including television, sponsorship, and financial support.
- G. Shirley and Bernard reported on an appeal of a June 25 Board decision regarding the transfer of an athlete to another Association. The appeal was heard by a National Arbitration Review Board, and may still be pending. Bernard called for a special meeting of the Board of Directors for September 17 to address this subject.
- G. Shirley and Bernard gave updates on Association accreditation status. The current Articles of Incorporation, dated November 21, 2001, have been resubmitted to the National Office. The Bylaws as approved by the Board have been accepted by the National Office, and the vote for acceptance will be reinforced at the Annual Meeting. The Association financial statement (Form 990 or equivalent) will be presented to the September 17 special meeting. Subsequent to the June 25 meeting, Bernard named Judy Ortwein to represent San Diego at the Association workshop August 15-17 in Miami. She will report to the Board at a later date.
- The meeting adjourned at 9:12 p.m.
