San Diego USATF

ANNUAL MEETING

2820 Camino del Rio South 130
September 21, 2005

  1. President Graeme Shirley called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. In addition to the President, the attendees were Lolitia Bache, Philip Dunn, Paul Greer, Thom Hunt, Lillian Mahoney, Jennifer Nanista, Sharon Powell, Jim Skelly, and Wes Williams.
  2. The members unanimously approved the minutes of the August 17 meeting.
  3. Treasurer Lolitia Bache provided a written report stating that the checking account balance was $7,915.85, while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000. She noted that the Association paid expenses for the Masters Association Track & Field Championships, but received no income. She also stated that she will be handling the entry fees and expenses for the Association Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships.
  4. Nanista reported that she and Rahn Sheffield were working on next year's Association Track & Field Championships and had met with the San Diego Track Club Board concerning finances, as they have a sponsor for the meet. They plan on holding the Championship the last Sunday in May, anticipating better participation on a Sunday than the Thursday dates of the past two years, and noting the difficulty of reserving the track on a Saturday. The members approved the date.
  5. Williams had nothing to add to Nanista's presentation, but in the absence of the Masters Chairman he did report that James Chinn won gold medals at the WMA Outdoor World Championships in both the 400 meter dash and the 1600 meter relay.
  6. Greer reported that the next event in the Dirt Dog series is the Balboa Boogie on October 1st. Hunt and Greer informed the Board that their bid for the 2007 Winter Cross Country National Championship went to Boulder by a 5-4 vote. However the Cross Country Council then awarded the 2008 Championships to San Diego, unless the U.S. hosts the World Championships, in which case the award would go to the U.S. site.
  7. Skelly reported that currently there are 69 certified officials with 10 more in process. Skelly also reported that for next year, again, there will be several conflicting meets, thus we need more officials.
  8. Shirley gave the registration report. As of September 21, the Association had 1615 members (1125 youth, 210 open, and 280 masters). This should be nearly the total for 2005, since 2006 registrations start November 1.
  9. The Nominating Committee made the following recommendations for Vice President: Jay Beltz, Kettrell Berry, and Thom Hunt. However, Powell stated for Berry that he did not want to run. There were no further nominations. After discussion of the responsibilities of the position and merits of the candidates, an election was held between Hunt and Beltz. The members elected Beltz as Vice President to fill the remainder of Arnie Robinson's term, through the 2006 Annual Meeting.
  10. The election procedure bylaw changes will be discussed at a later Board meeting.
  11. Shirley stated that he felt the sports committee chairmen did a great job and that, with the exception of youth, the same individuals would be named for the upcoming year. For Youth Chairman, the sense of the members was that the chairman should not be an active youth coach. The members approved renaming the committee chairmen, and named Jennifer Nanista to fill one of the active athlete positions. Shirley asked Dunn if he could recommend another active athlete to fill the other spot on the Board.
  12. Shirley asked the Committee Chairmen about their availability as delegates for the upcoming National Meeting. He stated that we need more active athletes. He asked Dunn and other members to provide the names of athletes who may be attending the National Meeting, and who could represent the Association as delegates.
  13. The meeting adjourned at 7:59 p.m.
