BUENA VISTA PARK, VISTA, Calif. - (November 10, 2002) - The San Diego Roadrunners cross country teams captured five of the six team titles and all six individual titles at the 2002 San Diego Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships Sunday.
Haidee Ortiz and Shanna St. Laurent led the Roadrunners to a sweep of the Bantam (age 10 and under) girls race, covering the 3000 meter rain-soaked course in 13:24.
Connor Kuhlman led the Bantam boys by almost 20 seconds as the Roadrunners also took the top 5 spots in that race.
11-year-old Deidra Spinler won the 3000 meter Midget (age 11-12) girls race by 43 seconds (and would have placed fourth among the 11 and 12-year-old boys), as the Roadrunners took the top three positions.
Roadrunner Ben Enowitz led the Midget boys, but the fourth and fifth runners decided a narrow team victory for the Temecula Valley Time Machine, the only blemish on the Roadrunner day.
Brooke Penney was the top Youth girl (age 13-14) on the longer 4000 meter course as the Roadrunners swept that division.
Among Youth boys, Travis Kuhlman matched younger brother Connor's Bantam win with a 20 second victory.
The Association Championships are qualifiers for the Regional Championships November 18 in La Mirada. The top 25 individuals and the top three teams in each division qualified for that meet.
There were no entrants among the Intermediate (age 15-16) boys and girls or Young men and women (age 17-18) divisions, as they may be waived to the Regionals if they are in high school league finals. There are no waivers from the Regionals to the Nationals.
