Becoming a San Diego Track & Field Official
USATF requires the following steps to become a certified official:
- Attend the USATF Certification Clinic. SDT&FOA conducts an annual clinic, usually in January. The 2004 clinic was January 17.
- Complete a review of the USATF Rules of Competition. This is not an examination, but a written exercise to help you gain familiarity with the organization of the rules.
- Pay a nominal fee (about $10) for the four year registration.
- Fill out an application.
USATF will send you an identification card with your permanent ID number and a lapel pin identifying you as an official. As you progress in officiating you can graduate from the Association to the National and Master levels of officiating. Certification at these levels creates eligibility to officiate at championship meets.
Officials must be recertified each Olympiad; January 2005 began the process for current officials, and recertification began in the Fall of 2004.
