San Diego-Imperial Athletics Congress

MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Balboa Park Hall of Champions
June 21, 1995

  1. President Ken Bernard called the meeting to order at 7:43 p.m. In addition to the President and Secretary, the attendees were Lolitia Bache, Michael DiPippo, Arnie Robinson, Jim Skelly, and Elizabeth Tate.
  2. The Board approved the minutes of the meeting of April 19.
  3. The President gave the Treasurer's report. As of May 10, the checking account balance was $4991.56 while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000. There were expenses for the Awards and the Annual Dinner, plus the Association pays fees for some large races before reimbursement. The balance is probably close to $6700 now.
  4. Bernard attended a meeting at Mesa April 28 at which Robinson replaced Erl Cabanas as Association Junior Olympics Track and Field Championship meet director. Cabanas will continue to be part of the meet organization.
  5. Robinson reported that the Junior Olympics organizing committee is meeting at least weekly. The Olympic Training Center has facilities which allow six long jump competitions, four shot puts, and seven discus throws simultaneously. There will be no overlap of running and field events. The Board spent some time discussing the logistics, and Robinson seemed to have everything under control. The Board was also interested in the distribution of any surplus from the meet. Since entry fees are just $3 for the first event and $2 for subsequent ones, there probably will not be a significant profit.
  6. The Board discussed the possibility of an Association Track and Field Championship. There has been no progress toward one.
  7. Robinson stated that Boris McDaniel has sickle-cell anemia. His illness is to be kept quiet. His son may qualify for the National Junior Olympics Championships, and a fund-raiser is being organized for July 1, possibly a 12-hour relay. The Board unanimously approved a motion by Bernard that SDIAC provide $200 seed money to the fund for McDaniel, if the event occurs.
  8. Shirley stated that he had been contacted by Hal Higdon about a stop in San Diego, possibly January 30. Higdon will be on a promotional tour for his new coffee-table book "100 Years of Boston." Higdon would like someone in the San Diego area to organize some gathering of runners.
  9. Shirley also stated that while in New York he attended the New York Games, and offered the opinion that the meet seemed to be dying.
  10. The meeting adjourned at 8:58 p.m.

    Secretary
