MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

1. President Ken Bernard called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. In addition to the President and Secretary, the attendees were Lolitia Bache, Paul Greer, Lillian Mahoney, Ed Oleata, Patty Oleata, Joy Sargis, Elizabeth Tate, and Chuck Woolsey.
2. The Board approved the minutes of the meeting of October 17.
3. The President gave the Treasurer's report. The checking account balance was $1726.81 while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000.
4. The President gave a quick summary of the convention. Tate described the Youth Committee meetings. The Youth Committee awarded the 2003 Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, for which the Association bid, to Albuquerque.
5. Greer reported on the Association Cross Country Championships and the Dirt Dog Series. Nazario Romero and Laura Stuart each won both the November 10 Championships, as well as the Series championships. Age 40-49 winners were Hector Perez and Kim Rouse, while Dennis Kasischke and Willie Mundt won for ages 50 and up. Seven runners completed all seven races. Greer thanked the San Diego Track Club (Sue McCarthy director), Steve Taggart, Pat Thiss, Ted Van Arsdale, Kathy Loper, Brent Poser and Manny Bautista (Championship) for their contributions as race directors for the series. He also noted that he had some discussions with Bob Larsen about coordinating the San Diego Association Series with some Southern California Association races.
6. The Board noted the February 1, 2002 date for the Annual Dinner and made some preliminary nominations for the major awards. The Awards Committee will meet January 7, tentatively at the Board Meeting site.
7. Shirley gave a quick review of the amendments to the Rules of Competition adopted at the convention, noting the action on the false start rule, the ability to appeal the failure of the starter to call a false start if false start control apparatus is used, and, in most circumstances, the reduction in the time to make an attempt in any field event to one minute.
8. Shirley reported that the bid for the Carlsbad 5000 to be the 2002 National Masters Championship had been rejected, and no bid was awarded. Bernard announced that Curt Clausen had succeeded in the bid for the 50K Racewalk Championship.
9. Sargis stated that she and Allen Bowman were working on a date and site for the Association Track and Field Championships and they were looking for suggestions for the best date in late May or early June. UCSD may be available.
10. The meeting adjourned at 8:12 p.m.
