San Diego USATF

2820 Camino del Rio South 130
January 18, 2006

  1. President Graeme Shirley called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. In addition to the President, the attendees were Lolitia Bache, Jay Beltz, Kettrell Berry, Philip Dunn, Paul Greer, Thom Hunt, Lillian Mahoney, Roland Morris, Jennifer Nanista, Sharon Powell, and Wes Williams.
  2. The Board unanimously approved the minutes of the December 14, 2005 meeting.
  3. Bache provided the Treasurer's report. The checking account balance is $2,266.83, while the certificates of deposit were another $16,000. Bache stated that there were still some checks outstanding and deposits to be made. She also stated that from last year's end of the year balance, we are down approximately $8,000 and that she may have to monitor each committee's budget closer. Youth was a major contributor to the decrease, due especially to last year's Regional Championship having little control of meet expenses. Masters was also a small contributor to the shortage in funds.
  4. Nanista reported that the date of the 2006 Association Track & Field Championships will be Sunday, May 28. She is working with the San Diego Track Club and Road Runner Sports on the funding and promotion of the event. Road Runner Sports will provide major sponsorship through the San Diego Track Club and be a title sponsor. The Board approved moving forward with the event. Registration will again be through Direct Athletics. Nanista hopes to promote harder through signing, advertising at San Diego State, SDTC and other local meets. Shirley suggested that she check with the National office to insure that the meet complied with USATF naming standards, especially with having Road Runner Sports as a title sponsor. Road Runner Sports wishes to hold a one day/night registration at their store, hooked up to online registration. Nanista wanted to make this meet bigger and better and asked for any suggestions the board may wish to provide. Dunn said that the walkers wished to have a 5000 meter race on the program.
  5. Nanista stated that the Aztec Invitational would be a two-day meet at the Olympic Training Center on March 17th and 18th.
  6. Williams said he was working closely with Nanista and Sheffield for the upcoming season. He also stated that he was holding a coach and athlete hurdles clinic at Westview High School on February 11, 2006 at 10:00 a.m.
  7. Hunt reported that the distance carnival is scheduled for May 13. The meet will be the same format as last year, but the location is uncertain and may not be at Patrick Henry High School.
  8. Dunn reported that the USA 30 km Race Walk Championship held in Chula Vista on January 15 went well. There were 28 competitors at the full 30 km distance, including three foreign guest athletes. The race included six athletes racing non-championship distances of 10 km or 20 km. Only five competitors did not finish or were disqualified. Kevin Eastler broke Curt Clausen's American Record by 2:30 with his winning time of 2:12:53 and was named USATF Athlete of the Week. Jolene Moore (1:37:33) met the IAAF "B" standard at 20 km. (Extra judges were flown in to meet IAAF requirements.) So far she is the only American qualified for the world championships. There were also three American Masters Records broken. Deborah Huberty won the women's race.
  9. Dunn also stated that the 30 km championship will be in Chula Vista in 2007. At the suggestion of the Southern California Association officials, he may be adding a 20 km Regional Championship to the event.
  10. Morris stated that the youth track and field schedule was getting underway, and he distributed a 2006 schedule. Meets are open to all USATF registered youths.
  11. Berry reported that the Association Masters Track and Field Championship Meet would again be in conjunction with the Chuck McMahon Memorial Masters meet and is scheduled for either June 24th or 25th. The site is not set, but it may be at Patrick Henry High School or Cuyamaca College. The San Diego Senior Olympics will also have a role in the meet.
  12. Mahoney elaborated on the records set at the 30 km Race Walk Championships. Aside from Eastler's mark, Ray Sharp (M45, 2:29:40) and Mark Green (M50, 2:37:29) set American Masters records. Green also set a 25 km record (1:45:07) en route.
  13. Beltz discussed the annual dinner. A committee of Beltz, Greer and Bache will select a site, date and award winners.
  14. The Board approved Powell's motion that an audit of the Youth Committee budget, membership dues, and expenditures be conducted by a committee of Beltz (a Certified Public Accountant), Bache and Powell.
  15. The Board approved a motion by Bache that Joy Sargis be the San Diego USATF webmaster.
  16. The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
